Rosa Parks' mother and maternal grandparents encouraged her from an early age to stand up for herself and to feel good about herself even though she was mistreated because of the color of her skin. On December 1\, 1955\, Rosa Parks refused to surrender her seat to a white male passenger and was arrested by the Montgomery Police.
